NCLAC Launches First Academy Classes

NCLAC is so excited to offer Academy Classes. The NCLAC Academy will help us better fulfill our mission in a number of ways, benefiting artists and the community alike.   The Academy will not only offer more opportunities for professional artists to earn income through their passion; it will also offer opportunities for all ages to expand their horizons, whether simply for pleasure or to learn valuable skills.

The classes will be taught by qualified staff and will be offered in seven week cycles. If you are interested in submitting a class proposal, please download our proposal form (see Shared Files at the bottom) and mail to P.O. Box 911, Ruston, LA 71273. 

NCLAC will offer the following classes during our first session from September 7-October 25:

Tiny Tots Academy

Momma and Me Instructor: Lou Davenport Kavanaugh Ages: 3 & 4 with Adults Time: Thursdays 9-11 am Member Cost: $15 a week @ 7 weeks = $105 Cost: $20 a week @ 7 weeks = $140

Three and four-year-olds will complete artworks with their Moms! They’ll learn about famous artists, and complete art projects in the style of the artist. Picasso, Matisse, Lichenstein, Pollock, Rousseau, Van Gogh, and Louisiana’s own George Rodriquez will be featured. A snack will be provided.

Jr. Academy

Improvisation & Creative Movement Instructor: Chris Alec Champion Ages: 6-14 Time: Tuesday & Thursday 3:30-5:00 pm Member Cost: $20 a week @ 7 weeks = $140 Cost: $25 a week @ 7 weeks = $175

Students will learn exercises for theatrical training, including diction, intonation, and isolations, as well as diaphragm and vocal exercises. Students will also learn proven ways to approach character roles and techniques for better comprehension of movement styles and how they aid the actor on stage.

Survey in Drawing and Painting Instructor: Elizabeth Blackwelder Ages: 12-14 Time: Monday & Wednesday 3:30-5:00 pm Member Cost: $20 a week @ 7 weeks = $140 Cost: $20 a week @ 7 weeks = $140

Learn to draw with pencils, and paint with watercolors and acrylics. Students will draw and paint a variety of subjects, including animals and people, in realistic, representational, and abstract styles.

High School Academy

Creative Writing Instructor: Chris Alec Champion Ages: 15-18 Time: Tuesday & Thursdays 5:00-6:30pm Member Cost: $35 a week @ 7 weeks = $245 Cost: : $40 a week @ 7 weeks = $280

Students will learn and practice free writing, discuss and brainstorm about topics, and plan and develop storylines. They will also learn ways to approach writing children’s books, stage, film, and poetry. Exercises are designed to create clear picture, distinct emotion, and spiritual awareness.

Scene Work for Teens Instructor: Leigh Anne Chambers Ages: 15-18 Time: Monday & Wednesday 5:00-6:30pm Member Cost: $35 a week @ 7 weeks = $245 Cost: : $40 a week @ 7 weeks = $280

This course will introduce teens to scene work based on the acting methods of Richard Boleslavsky. The class will work scenes from popular playwrights and follow the methods outlined in the text Acting: The First Six Lessons.

Prismacolor Colored Pencils Instructor: Joshua Chambers Ages: 15-18 Time: Friday 3:30pm-6:30pm Member Cost: $35 a week @ 7 weeks = $245 Cost: : $40 a week @ 7 weeks = $280

Through demonstration and guided studio exercises, students will learn how to use prismacolor pencils for portraiture, landscape, illustration, and other representational artwork.

Writing College Application Essays Instructor: April Honaker Ages: 15-18 Time: Monday & Wednesday 3:30-5:00pm Member Cost: $35 a week @ 7 weeks = $245 Cost: : $40 a week @ 7 weeks = $280

Students will learn what college admission and scholarship committees are looking for in an application essay. Through various exercises and revision workshops, they can create a powerful statement that sets them apart from other applicants.

Adult Academy

Painting with Pastels Instructor: Joshua Chambers Ages: Adult Time: Saturday 2-5pm Member Cost: $40 a week @ 7 weeks = $280 Cost: $50 a week @ 7 weeks = $350

Learn to use soft pastels for representational art. Through demonstration and guided studio exercises, learn how to use soft pastels for portraiture, landscape, still-life, and other representational artwork.

Acting Workshop Instructor:Geri Taylor Ages: Adult Time: Friday 6:30-9:30 pm Member Cost: $40 a week @ 7 weeks= $280 Cost: $50 a week @ 7 weeks = $350

Inspired by the acting techniques of Uta Hagen, this workshop will appeal to both novice and experienced actors. Students will learn to apply “The Six Steps” discussed in her book A Challenge for the Actor, and they’ll get to watch the director, actors, and crew of Ruston Community Theatre’s Dial M for Murder as they build a play.

Experimental Water Media Instructor: Marlen Waters Ages: Adult Time: Monday 5:30 pm-8:30 pm Member Cost: $40 a week @ 7 weeks = $280 Cost: $50 a week @ 7 weeks = $350

Students will learn to use various water media to create their own compositions and explore semi-realistic and abstract themes.

Introduction to Photography & Photoshop Instructor: Caleb Clark Ages: Teen-Adult Time: Friday 5 pm-7 pm Teen Member Cost: $25 a week @ 7 weeks = $175 Teen Cost: $30 a week @ 7 weeks = $210 Adult Member Cost: $30 a week @ 7 weeks = $210 Adult Cost: $40 a week @ 7 weeks = $280

Students will learn about the history of photography, basic camera functions, lighting, technique, and composition. Later in the course, students will learn basic Adobe Photoshop and editing skills. Students can use digital or film cameras.

Method 3 You can stop by our offices inside the Dixie Center for the Arts in downtown Ruston, 212 N. Vienna.

Payment

Payment can be made by check or cash in one or two installments. Payment is due at the first class meeting and, if paying in two installments, during the fourth week of class (Sept. 26-Oct. 1). Make checks payable to NCLAC.
