Call for Musicians Ages19 – 35: One Beat
Deadline February 24, 2012 One Beat is an initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, administered by Bang on a Can’s Found Sound Nation. OneBeat builds on Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s vision of “smart power” diplomacy. It embraces the use of a full range of diplomatic tools, including music, to bring people, especially youth, together for greater understanding.
OneBeatSM is an international music exchange that celebrates musical collaboration and social engagement through innovative people-to-people diplomacy. In the fall of 2012, 30 musicians (ages 19-35) from around the world will come together in the U.S. for four weeks to collaboratively write, produce, and perform original music, and develop ways that music can make a positive impact on our local and global communities.
OneBeat will be a musical journey like no other. It is a chance for adventurous musicians from an incredible diversity of traditions to seek common ground, creating new musical combinations, pushing the boundaries of music technology, and finding ways to involve all members of society in the process of musical creativity. OneBeat endeavors to be the nexus of a new way of thinking about how music can connect people from across the world and around the block.

Music Residencies @ Yellow Barn
Application Form (Download PDF) Yellow Barn Artist Residencies provide the unique opportunity for musicians to develop projects of their own choosing in an environment conducive to undistracted study. Residencies are open to musicians of any age and at any stage of their career.
Yellow Barn Artist Residencies Support:
- The exploration and preparation of repertoire for performance.
- Collaborative projects which bring together performers, composers and other artists.
- Opportunities for public performance and participation in outreach activities within the local community.
- Musicians may choose to work independently or with mentoring artists and scholars during their residency.
Location and Accommodations
The Yellow Barn Artist Residencies will take place in Putney, a historic village in southeastern Vermont. Rehearsal facilities are located on Yellow Barn’s summer campus at the Greenwood School, just above the village.
- Yellow Barn will provide housing within the local community, and some meals that will take place on the Greenwood School campus or with local hosts.
- Additional funding to assist with travel expenses might be available.
Application Information
Yellow Barn will accept applications from ensembles and individual musicians interested in pursuing either independent or collaborative projects. Yellow Barn’s Artistic Director will consult with selected musicians to determine the length and shape of the residency. While most residencies take place during one week, the exact length of the residency is based on the project’s goals.
Deadlines
Applications for Yellow Barn Artist Residencies are accepted on an ongoing basis. The next deadline is April 1, 2012 for residencies taking place between September 2012 and May 2013.

Banff Centre
Performing Arts Residencies are offered in dance, theatre, opera/music theatre, and interdisciplinary forms. Through the residencies program, professional artists can utilize the unique resources of the Theatre Arts Department in developing and refining new work. Applications are accepted from individuals, groups, and companies. An important feature of this artist-driven program is the potential for access to The Banff Centre’s professional theatre facilities for studio and onstage rehearsal periods with some technical support.

Long Wharf Theatre Residency
Long Wharf Theatre has a long history of launching the careers of young artists through its Next Stage program, the theatre’s early career development program. The Next Stage program is dedicated to engaging and employing a new generation of diverse theatre artists, administrators and leaders. The Next Stage Program is divided into two groups: Residents and Interns. Both groups work among professionals to learn from hands-on experience.
NOTE: The deadline for resident applications for the 2012-13 season is April 1, 2012.

Book project asks New Orleans to capture spirit of the city
Short story submission deadline is February 21, 2012
New Orleanians are invited to enter short works and artwork for New Orleans by New Orleans, an upcoming collection of stories and art inspired by New Orleans and the people who live there.
“We seek amazing stories of the Crescent City from people who know it best – what is in the heart and deserves to be said,” said project creator Ryan Smolar. “We seek stories inspired by, set in, or about New Orleans.”
Selected stories will be published in New Orleans by New Orleans and will be available for sale in local bookstores and on-line.
All genres are welcome, including fiction, non-fiction, essay, plays, monologues, poetry, song lyrics, tall tales, family histories, folklore, neighborhood legends and more. Each entry must be 600 words or less (that’s roughly equivalent to one full page of single-spaced text, typed in 12 point font).
All two-dimensional artwork is welcome including Photography, Drawing, Painting, Illustration, Digital Illustration, etc.
All skill levels and ages are welcome, though anyone under 18 must have parent or guardian approval.

Book by Authors is the program producing New Orleans by New Orleans. Started by Smolarcorp in 2006, Book by Authors creates a ‘written time capsule’ of a community’s diverse thoughts, hopes, fears and past experiences via a published collection of short works (fiction, non-fiction and everything in between). Stories that have been linked by a common geographic place are literally bound into one book.
Smolarcorp created Book by Authors in response to the National Endowment for the Arts’ “The Big Read” – a program that encourages a city to collectively “Read One Book.” In contrast, Book by Authors creates a model for a city to “Write One Book” about itself.

Second Annual Art and Earth Juried Art Exhibit
The Berkeley Arts Counciland The Arts Centre are again joining forces to bring a juried art exhibit to The Arts Centre gallery in Martinsburg, WV, April 20 - May 20, 2012. The exhibit, which will be produced by the Berkeley Arts Council, will have the theme "Art and Earth: My Art - My World." Artists in all media are invited to submit works that express their feelings about nature and the environment. The Juror for the exhibit will be Laura Amussen, Director of Exhibitions and Art Collection Coordinator at Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland. Full details are in the prospectus. Philip Roth Residence
A four-month residency, which includes a $4,000 stipend, at the Stadler Center for Poetry at Bucknell University is given annually to a poet, a fiction writer, or a creative nonfiction writer. The 2012 Philip Roth Residence is open to U.S. poets who are over the age of 21 and not enrolled in a college or university. Using the online submission system, submit up to 10 pages of poetry, a curriculum vitae, and three letters of recommendation by February 11. There is no entry fee. Brown University
International Writers Project Fellowship
A fellowship, which includes a stipend of $45,000, is given annually to an established international poet or fiction writer “who is unable to practice free expression at home.” The fellowship, sponsored by the Graduate Program in Literary Arts and the Thomas J. Watson Institute for International Studies, provides funds for relocation to the United States, living expenses, and an office on the Brown University campus for 10 months. Writers or individuals seeking to nominate a writer may submit at least 10 pages of poetry or prose along with English translations, a case history, a publishing history, and a resumé by February 15. Converse College
Julia Peterkin Award
A prize of $1,000 and an invitation to read in Converse College’s Visiting Writers Series is given in alternating years for a group of poems or a work of fiction. The 2012 award will be given for poetry. Original works in English, either previously published or unpublished, are eligible.
