Hello, hello. Sophia here, with my first Thursday blog post of many to come! Each Thursday, I will let you in on a bit of what it's like to be graduating with an undergrad in visual arts and essentially, what it is like to be an emerging artist. With just one more quarter here at Louisiana Tech University, I am getting extremely close to the effects of the 'real world' and finding work in the art field.
To jump ahead a bit, I would like to discuss my first solo exhibition, "Multiples," which just opened Monday December 3rd at the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts in Natchitoches, LA. I think the best way to go through my experience with this is to share my answers to a few of the common questions I've received about it all.
1. How do you go about getting a solo exhibition? Well, I have kept in touch with my art teacher from LSMSA since graduation and since he manages the gallery there, he offered me a show. Connections are GREAT! Networking, networking. In general, I would say get your work out there, whether it be in group shows, juried shows or even fundraisers. Making an appearance and actively engaging in 'art talk' will get you into the art network on some level.
2. What do you do in preparation for a solo exhibition? Time frame strongly affects this, but with 9 months notice, I felt like I had all the time in the world. My first mistake! Don't underestimate a deadline- no matter how far away it seems.
*At least one month in advance, have the following:
--postcards/posters designed and printed
--press release written and sent out
--have artwork list (titles, year, medium, price available), along with a bio, artist statement and resume on hand
-- have a game plan for the transportation of all artwork. (have you ever thought about transporting ALL of you best works at once?? --nerve racking? yes!)
--double check artwork, for cleanliness/touch-ups/etc.
-- when packing for installation, plan to have to repair anything! If artwork has protruding parts/pieces that may be knocked off, bring extra parts/pieces, or materials for repairing damage.
3. How does your first show make you feel? I feel amazing having shown only my work in one large space for people to investigate and take in. Because it is only my work in the space, I feel that my audience can relate the pieces to each other, thus strengthening their understanding of the context. Essentially, it is a great honor to have a solo exhibition.
Organizing and preparing for this show was stressful and hectic at times, but way worth it and something I hope to do much more of in the future!
