Art Around Town: yMusic this Thursday at Howard Auditorium

Article written by Nicholas Norris, Marketing Director for the LA Tech Concert Association

On October 4, 2018, the Louisiana Tech Concert Association will bring one of its most unique shows yet to the Howard Center for the Performing Arts. yMusic is a six-person ensemble out of New York that takes pride in the music they play. Praised by Performance Today’s Fred Child as “one of the groups that has really helped shape classical music,” yMusic seeks to find that perfect blend between pop and classical music.

While yMusic has created three solo albums, they have also collaborated with some of music’s biggest names. They worked exclusively with Ben Folds on his 2015 album, So There. After touring with Ben Folds, they released a 10-inch live vinyl that consisted of co-written songs and some of the group’s favorite live improvised pieces. yMusic has also worked with names such as Jose Gonzalez and Paul Simon.

yMusic saw success fly to new heights during their 2016-17 season. On top of their astonishing debut in Carnegie Hall, yMusic was also given the opportunity to work on an album with Son Lux and producer Thomas (Doveman) Bartlett. yMusic was also commissioned to write a piece for Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw. It was also during this time that the group had the opportunity to play a set with Paul Simon at the Eaux Claires Festival.
