Art Around Town: The Groundling

All the world’s a stage, including Bob’s garage in his Long Island home. Marc Palmieri’s The Groundling, directed by new Acting and Directing Professor Kristen Blossomwill be performed in Arthur W. Stone Theatre, located in Louisiana Tech University’s Howard Center for the Performing Arts. The show runs October 23 through October 27, 2018 at 7:30 pm and October 28 at 2:00 pm.

Bob Malone, a landscaper who recently stumbled upon a production of Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost while meandering through Central Park, becomes inspired to write his own play about his relationship with his wife, Karen. Bob rounds up a pair of neighborhood hipsters, his practically-deaf father-in-law, and a trained actress at her career’s end to stage his play. Pretentious director Dodd leads the charge to humorously reenact the young couple’s love story. Laced with lessons about love and loss, Bob’s retelling of his youth shows how theatre truly is a reflection of life, even if the mirror happens to be cracked.

Senior Theatre major Kaitlin Riley, who plays Ally, hopes the audience finds the show as funny and charming as she does. “Everyone brings a different energy to the show and each scene is different every day,” she says. “Sometimes it’s difficult not to burst out laughing or to stay in character with everyone’s improvisation. Everything about the show is so natural that it’s easy to forget that I’m even in a play. My character is an outsider, so it’s always interesting to see how other people live in their own home, getting to see everything about them: the good, the bad, and ugly.” When asked about her favorite part of the process, Kaitlin responded, “I really like working with my cast mates. With such a small cast, we’ve all gotten pretty close and have learned to be vulnerable around each other, it’s brought us closer together as friends.”
