One high school. One samurai. One group of shoguns. Louisiana Tech Stone Theatre will soon transform into the halls of an all-American high school where Emi Edwards fights to save her school against the shoguns and discover who she truly is. Written by Emmy and Obie award-winning Qui Nguyen, Begets: Fall of A High School Ronin, will be performed in Arthur W. Stone Theatre, located in Louisiana Tech University’s Howard Center for the Performing Arts. The show runs April 9 -13, 2019, at 7:30 pm, and April 14, at 2:00 pm.

Emi Edwards, played by Madelynn Deason, is your average, geeky high school teenager, besides the fact she’s a butt-kicking samurai. Through endless training, she makes it a mission to take on the “Five Shoguns” of her high school. Emi and her Conscience, Inside Girl, played by Kaitlin Riley, form together to defeat them one by one to slowly take back control of the school. Will her obsession with taking down the shoguns transform her into what she has fought to destroy? According to Madelynn Deason, “People should come to see Begets not just for the exciting fights but also because the story shows the complex power dynamics in schools, relationships and in at home life. The story has a wide variety of characters, therefore, every individual in the audience will feel represented.” She continues, “Emi grows tremendously throughout the show. She starts out as an invisible highschooler who just tries to get through the day. However, after standing up for her fellow peer Laura she becomes a hero for the underdogs of the school. Emi's confidence grows as she faces each shogun. Watching Emi's journey has the ability to inspire young audiences to raise their voices against injustices.”
