Art Around Town: A Busy Fall

Article written by Jessica Slaughter, Executive Director of NCLAC

Wow -- what a whirlwind in the NCLAC office right now! Thursday, September 20th was our first film of the Southern Circuit Tour season, The Unafraid, and filmmaker Heather Courtney was here to speak with the audience following the film. Thanks to Louisiana Tech University Spanish Professor Dr. Paul Nelson for moderating the Q&A, with the assistance of Dr. Susan Roach, Head of Literature and Language. We hope to see our readers at the next film on October 25, ¡Las Sandinistas!

We are thrilled to present a concert by Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys on November 1 at the Dixie Center. Grammy winner Steve Riley and 4 time nominees The Mamou Playboys play in the traditional Cajun style of South Louisiana, featuring the distinctive sounds of the accordion, fiddle, and three-way vocal harmony. The group is on its 30th anniversary tour, and we are tickled to be able to bring them to Ruston. Tickets are $20 each, and are available at the Dixie Center and at nclac.org

Our 7pm public performance is sponsored by Peter Jones and Hampton Inn by Hilton of Ruston. The band will also be performing an exclusive matinee show for Lincoln Parish students as part of NCLAC’s annual School Performance Series. Students will receive this special morning concert and a Q&A time with the artists thanks to sponsorship from Catherine & Winston McVea. If a school group wishes to be counted in the audience for the educational matinee, contact the NCLAC office at nclac5@gmail.com to reserve seats.

We are officially one month out from ARToberfest, sponsored by Gibson’s Fresh Grocer, which has become NCLAC’s largest annual fundraiser. This craft beer tasting event will have two home brew awards, the Devine Home Brewer Judge’s Choice and the Utility Brewing People’s Choice, and we have more home brewers signed up to participate than ever before. With new food trucks and new bands, a new “super secret silent auction,” and commercial craft beers provided by Marsala Beverage, Choice Brands, AND International Wines & Spirits, we have an excellent tasting lined up for ticket holders. In addition to Gibson’s Fresh Grocer and the commercial distributors listed above, we have a number of other sponsors who are providing assistance so that we can make this the best year yet. Thanks to Ruston Animal Clinic, The Selfie Stop, Utility Brewing, Devine Wines & Spirits, Troy Lord Electric, The Keg Package & Liquor, Catahoula CrossFit, The Norton Building, and Fine Line Supply. And speaking of Fine Line Supply, they are graciously selling our tickets for us. If you’re local, stop by and purchase yours there. For an online ticket purchase, visit nclac.org  Ticket prices are as follows: Designated Driver $10, General Admission $30, and Early Bird $45. All guests must be 21 or over.
