Louisiana Tech’s School of Design is having a big week with Visiting Artist: YELLOW!

The School of Design is happy to welcome artist/musician PEELANDER YELLOW (aka Kengo Hioki) to the Louisiana Tech campus. While perhaps best known as the leader of the “Japanese Action Comic” punk band Peelander-Z, known for color-coordinated costumes as well as on-stage antics such as human bowling and other forms of “intense audience participation,” Yellow studied art and printmaking at Osaka University of Arts and joined the New York Art League after completing his studies. He shifted from the visual arts to music/performance while in NYC and started Peelander-Z in 1998, a band that has played worldwide.  As an artist, he’s exhibited extensively in Japan, Mexico, and the US, particularly in Austin, Texas (his new home base). His murals are all over Austin, including its Facebook Corporate Offices, as well restaurants, shoppes and galleries throughout the city.

YELLOW will be in the FJ Taylor Visual Arts Center from Tuesday through Thursday to paint a mural with Japanese illustrator Hideaki Yamasaki (aka The Rocket Gold Star) and students in the School of Design.

MAD TIGER, directed by Jon Yi and Michael Haertlein, is a feature-length documentary that follows the relationship of two Japanese men, Yellow and Red, who have been best friends, band mates, and business partners touring the United States in the performance-art punk band called Peelander-Z for the last fifteen years. When Red decides to quit, their relationship is tested by life beyond the band. The film has been part of many film festivals around the world. Yellow will be on hand to share his insights in this film.

YELLOW will also give an artist talk and play music in the Visual Arts Center, though don’t be surprised to see him around campus as well (you’ll know when you see him!).

Here’s the schedule:
