What a wonderful 2016 Holiday Arts Tour! Friday night was spectacular, with hordes of people on the streets of historic downtown Ruston. With clear cold weather, the new lights downtown created a lovely setting for our 19th annual celebration of the arts. Artists made sales, shop owners were pleased with new and repeat customers, and Tour-goers received a delightful first-hand experience with the arts.
Even though Saturday brought rain and rather dreary weather, it also brought Sprout Hour and Art in Action at the Historic Fire Station. Both of these were a huge hit, with lots of participants and excitement about art! Art in Action artists this year were Julie Roane, Julie Crews, Nicole Duet, Charlotte Hudson, Jessica Horne, Bonnie Ferguson, and the team of Connor Little and Natalie Sims. These artists did great work in an intense environment! Congratulations to Jessica Horne for winning our first Art in Action competition!
While the artists painted, lots of little hands were creating art with our Sprout Hour teachers. Catherine McVea, Christiane Drieling, April Honaker, and the team of Victoria and Mashall Smith (Pint Size Printers) led the kids in great hands’ on projects. Visitors to the Historic Fire Station during these activities were treated to the magic of art.
Performing artists treated Tour-goers to great performances, demonstrators showed people “how things are made,” many visitors drove to the exclusive off-site studios, and LOTS of people voted in the People’s Choice contest.
We finished the weekend with a cool show from Implosion Percussion at Sundown Tavern, where we also announced HAT winners. Congratulations to Raluca Iancu and Nick Bustamante, winners of the Judge’s Choice Awards for the Group Exhibition at Studio 301. Our judge this year was Brooke Foy – artist, owner at ARROW Public Art, and Professor of Art at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Congratulations to Linda Dwyer for the People’s Choice Award.
Thanks to all who played a part in the weekend. It was great, and we’re excited that next year will be our 20th anniversary! To see lots more photos from the weekend, visit our Facebook album linked here.
